Italy’s Answer to Vienna
Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.
Booking.com’s Trieste accommodation includes hotels with pools, cheap apartments by the station and B&Bs near Ronchi dei Legionari Airport.

When coming to Trieste, you shouldn't miss a stroll to Barcola in the summer a really lovely place to share an afternoon with friends having a swim in trasparent and green sea water.
Trieste offers a wide range of typical food but also international options; in the morning do not miss Via XX Settembre with its characteristic small cafeteria and bars with tasty street food.
At night you can enjoy a drink outside the lively pubs even in winter!
If you like caves, there is the Grotta Gigante, not far from town where you can experiment a journey in one of the tallest European Grotto.
Finally, there are also many hystorical and literary short trips you can book or arrange by yourself downtown or in the not too distant Slovenia.

Trieste is fantastic, very walkable, stunning architecture, good shopping, and plenty of excellent places to wine and dine. Public transport is very accessible for anyone wanting a day trip, perhaps if the weather is not cooperating, and it's very easy to hop on the train to visit Venice for a few hours, or to take a bus trip to Slovenia for the day. Trieste is very high on my list of places to return to as often as possible.

Trieste is gorgeous and it`s worth visiting.
Trieste is gorgeous and it`s worth visiting. There are loads to see in the area and you can also visit Croatia, Slovenia, as they are very close. It is easy to go from A to B with public transport (although I found the ticket system far too overcomplicated and be prepared that unless you speak / read Italian you will be a bit lost). Driving is not really recommended for inexperienced drivers as the roads are super steep and most of them are narrow. I would not visit the city with small kids in a buggy, because it can be very frustrating to push a buggy on these narrow / steep streets, but if your kids are older than 6-8 and can walk a lot, it is a great area to explore.

A beautiful coastal city, with fantastic facades and beautiful promenades and squares. Close to good beaches and places worth visiting. An excellent starting point for visiting Venice, Istria, Slovenia... Excellent food in restaurants, which are very affordable (20-50 EUR per person). House wines cost 7 EUR for half a liter, and they are excellent. Extremely well stocked stores.
A beautiful and charming space in an excellent location. We were only here for one night, but greatly enjoyed our stay. The room was very cosy and comfortable. It was great to have air conditioning, electric kettle and a refrigerator. It had a great view of the city. The host was very helpful with giving us directions. Bus number 20 and 21 brought us to the spot from Trieste Centrale. We visited the San Guisto castle which is about a 15 minute walk. Did not have time to explore further, but definitely hope to be back and stay here again.
Smart rooms is perfectly located in the center of Trieste. The staff was always available and helped us when we needed information and to store our luggage the day of checkout. During summer they provide a nice basic breakfast which helps start the day with the right foot. We had a room with shared bathroom and there was always an available bathroom when we needed it. The bathroom is big and comfortable. The room had a desk and the wifi speed was remarkably fast - a rarity on budget hotels.
The warm welcome of the always smiling host Paolo was a sign that we chose the right place in Trieste.
Great value for your money. Clean room with all the small things you need. Bulk of towels, amazing natural shampoo and shower gel (just wow 😊), choice of teas and coffee, many power sockets, fast internet connection and beautiful a la carte breakfast, served warm in the morning.
Thanks for making our visit to Italy simply adorable 🥂
Beautiful apartment. Fascinating decor, beautiful interpretation of a new hotel in a centuries old building. So convenient to everything in Trieste, including many excellent restaurants. Manuele and Kata were very helpful
With everything. We are coming back in a week to stay in a larger suite with another couple. Can’t wait! We will be recommending this hotel to our fellow travelers
We purchased the breakfast at the hotel each day. It was worth the price compared to upside eating spots. Recommend booking a room with breakfast included. Size of room was good, AC worked, Layout of room was different (it was in the top of the hotel). Location was great. We walked with suite cases s from train station to hotel Walked everywhere we went in Trieste.
I traveled for a conference and I stayed at Hotel Portacavana as a practical option. This is no luxury hotel, but it was very affordable, and was comfortable and clean. Also, Christian (staff) was very helpful and kind. I would definitely consider staying there if I travel to Trieste for work and need practical accommodation.
Our stay at the Le Saline luxury guest house was awesome. Clean, comfortable and perfect location. We were able to visit so many places and enjoy the historic and cultural areas. The staff was responsive and accommodating. We love it here and in Trieste in general. What an amazing city. E stato spettacolare! Grazie!
A wonderful small hotel in the old town of the beautiful city of Trieste, beautifully combining modern and old styles. Clean, convenient, tidy rooms and place in general, welcoming and competent staff, excellent breakfast served in a hospitable atmosphere. Convenient large public parking within walking distance.
Lovely little suite with sitting room & kitchentte, but the great pleasure of the room was
a little balcony looking out to sea. If we could afford only one luxury hotel in the world,
I think this would be it.
The front desk staff was especially warm & helpful, particularly the two Stephanos.
The hotel is about 15 min outside of Trieste. Easily reachable by bus - the bus stops in front of the hotel. Located at a little harbour with a few restaurants it makes for a nice, relaxing place. The gardens of the Miramar Castle are in walking distance (back entrance).
We had a great time staying at CA’MILLA Luxury Apartments Trieste. We spend two nights with our family (two kids). Great communication, quick check-in/-out, very cozy and really well equipped and stylish aparment close to city centre and Canal Grande.
Hotel is in the centre of Trieste and a few minutes away from the train station.
Breakfast was very good
Staff very friendly.
Rooms spacious and very clean.
Nice and modern hotel.
Highly recommended this hotel!
Thank you for the lovely Stay 😊
Clean, comfy boutique hotel, just in the center of Trieste. The couple who runs the hotel are super nice. When we informed them that we had change in plans, they even let us change the dates with no problem.
Location was perfect and the room was comfortable, spacious, nicely decorated and clean.
Hotel staff was very attentive and helpful to our needs. Definitely to-go place if visiting Trieste.
