International, Yet Unique
One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, picturesque Maastricht has an international feel. Not only can you walk to Belgium and cycle to Germany, this town also gave birth to the European Union and euro following the 1992 Maastricht Treaty.
Its largest square – Vrijthof – houses the twin churches of St Jan and St Servaas, a theatre and several pavement cafes. Various festivals and the Magic Maastricht Christmas markets are also held here. Markt square is home to the Flemish-style town hall, a twice-weekly market and yet more restaurants and bars offering great nightlife.
The excellent shopping options in Maastricht include unique shops on the cobbled Old Town streets, exclusive boutiques on Stokstraat, and the Entre Deux and Mosae Forum shopping centres. Dotted amongst these is Booking.com’s wide range of Maastricht accommodation.

A beautiful, clean, safe-feeling city with a truly international feel. A huge range of shops, bars and restaurants. A river running through it. An extremely walkable and, unsurprisingly for the Netherlands, cycle-friendly city. We ventured through the city square area to a lower key area on the edge of the centre, that seemed to have fewer tourists and more students, and ate at a good Korean fusion restaurant. What a pretty city in the eastern region of The Netherlands! My husband and I explored the city on foot for three days and discovered lovely shops, wonderful coffeeshops (check out Fixed Gear if you are a cyclist), and interesting restaurants. A lot of hidden gems on the outskirts of the city - definitely worth hopping on the bus from one end to the other and discovering what lies outside of the city center. Feels like a really nice breakfast restaurant. Location is perfect, five minutes walk from the city centre but the hotel itself is still really nice and quiet. The staff were also all nice and helpful. I'd happy stay here again when I return to Maastricht.
